Many people who went through conversion therapy describe the experience as confusing, isolating, traumatic, and emotionally damaging. Some were minors. Others trusted therapists, counselors, religious leaders, or authority figures who claimed they could “fix” or change who they were.

Colorado lawmakers are now allowing individuals to sue for damages arising out of conversion therapy and sexual orientation or gender identity change efforts. If you suffered emotional, psychological, or financial harm as a result of conversion therapy, you may have legal rights.

Attorney Aaron Israels believes that all people deserve to be heard, understood, and treated with dignity — especially when they were placed in vulnerable situations and suffered lasting harm. Call 720-599-3505 for victim information.

What Is Conversion Therapy?

Conversion therapy in Colorado refers to discredited therapeutic practices aimed at changing an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity. While Colorado originally banned the practice for minors in 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court restricted that ban in March 2026, ruling that restricting licensed professionals from providing verbal therapy services violates their First Amendment rights.

These practices may include:

Shame-based therapy and behavioral conditioning

Coercive religious counseling and aversion techniques

Isolation and programs designed to suppress LGBTQ identity

Many major medical and psychological organizations have warned that these practices cause significant, long-term psychological harm.

Colorado Is Expanding Civil Liability for Conversion Therapy

On June 1, 2026, Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed House Bill 26-1322, known as the “Civil Actions for Conversion Therapy Survivors” Act, into law. This law creates a new pathway for survivors of conversion therapy to pursue civil lawsuits against licensed professionals and providers who engaged in these practices.

The signing by Jared Polis comes only months after the United States Supreme Court struck down portions of Colorado’s prior conversion therapy restrictions on First Amendment grounds. In response, Colorado lawmakers enacted a new framework focused on civil malpractice liability rather than direct state speech restrictions.

For survivors and families in Colorado, the issue is no longer theoretical or political — it is now an active area of Colorado law with real legal remedies available.

The new law establishes: A direct right to sue, expanded liability for licensed providers and employers, claims for emotional distress, and broad timelines for bringing cases.

This legislation represents a major shift toward civil accountability for harms caused by conversion therapy practices in Colorado.

Who May Be Held Responsible?

Depending on the facts, lawsuits may potentially involve licensed therapists, psychologists, counselors, social workers, professional clinics, supervisors, or entities that employed individuals involved in the conduct.

Every case is different, and liability can depend heavily on:

The specific nature of the counseling and representations made during treatment

Whether minors were involved or coercion was used

The overall extent of the emotional or psychological harm

What Harm Can You Sue For?

Many survivors report years of emotional and psychological struggles after conversion therapy. Potential damages may include:

Type of Harm

Examples of Impact

Emotional Distress

Depression, anxiety, panic attacks, shame, emotional trauma, suicidal thoughts, or PTSD.

Psychological Injuries

Long-term counseling, psychiatric care, medication, or hospitalization after these experiences.

Relationship & Family Harm

Family estrangement, relationship breakdowns, social isolation, and loss of support systems.

Financial Harm

Therapy expenses, medical costs, lost wages, or other economic damages tied to emotional injuries.

Can Religious Organizations Be Sued?

This will likely become one of the most heavily contested legal issues in Colorado.

Some organizations may argue that certain counseling activities are protected by religious freedom or the First Amendment. Others may argue that harmful, coercive, or professionally negligent conduct by state-licensed practitioners should create civil liability regardless of religious context. Colorado courts will likely spend years defining the boundaries between constitutionally protected speech and actionable misconduct.

What If the Conduct Happened Years Ago?

One of the most significant aspects of Colorado’s legislation is that it allows lawsuits to be filed without a traditional statute of limitations.

Because it is retroactive, individuals may potentially pursue claims arising from conduct that occurred many years earlier. That issue itself will likely create major legal disputes involving retroactive liability, due process, constitutional protections, and evidentiary concerns.

What Compensation May Be Available?

Depending on the case, victims and survivors may seek compensation for:

Emotional distress, pain, and suffering

Psychological injuries, therapy, and medical expenses

Lost income and other damages allowed under Colorado law

Some cases may also involve claims for punitive or exemplary damages. If we take your case, it will be taken on a contingency fee basis, meaning NO UP FRONT COSTS to you. Call 720-599-3505 to talk to attorney Aaron Israels directly for more information on contingency fees. We always offer Free and Confidential case reviews.

You Deserve to Be Heard

People who went through conversion therapy often describe years of silence, shame, confusion, or fear about speaking publicly about what happened to them.

Attorney Aaron Israels understands that cases involving emotional trauma are deeply personal. We believe that all people deserve compassion, respect, and a serious evaluation of their legal rights. No one should feel ignored or dismissed after suffering emotional or psychological harm.

Incident Overview

A serious crash on North Union Boulevard, between Vickers Drive and Keystone Circle, prompted a full closure in both directions. The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) urged drivers to steer clear of the area amid the investigation. See Fox21 News Article Here

What We Know So Far

• The collision occurred near Union Boulevard and Garmish Road, just north of the Vickers intersection, and involved a motorcyclist.
• Emergency responders pronounced the rider dead at the scene, and CSPD conducted the investigation while the roadways remained closed.

Why This Matters

• Motorcycle accidents at this intersection follow closely on the heels of other recent fatal crashes in the area—marking a concerning trend for motorcyclist safety.

• Major road closures like this disproportionately impact local traffic flow, emergency vehicle access, and broader community mobility.

Your Rights After a Fatal or Severe Accident

If you’ve lost a loved one, or been injured yourself, here are actions you can take:

• File a wrongful death claim (if applicable), seeking compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, lost income, and emotional trauma.
• Pursue personal injury claims to recover expenses such as ongoing medical care, rehabilitation, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
• You may also have grounds for negligence if another party caused or contributed to the crash.

Incident Overview

On the morning of July 21, 2025, a deadly wrong‑way collision occurred on Highway 285 near Highway 8, west of C‑470 in Jefferson County. Troopers with Colorado State Patrol responded to the scene and confirmed two fatalities.

What Happened

Vehicle Involved: An Acura RL driven by 33‑year‑old Michael Colson was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes—heading the wrong way.

Sequence of Collisions:

The Acura struck a Cadillac CTS, whose driver and passenger both died.

Victims

The deceased victims who occupied the Cadillac were identified as a 59‑year‑old man and a 64‑year‑old woman. Additional reporting indicates the victims were a Conifer couple beloved in their community as operators of a local business. (See CBS News Report Here)

Denver, CO — A violent road rage incident unfolded on Sunday, August 10, 2025, resulting in at least one fatality and one person critically injured.
What Happened?

Location & Time: The crash occurred near East Hampden Avenue and South Yosemite Street around 7:25 p.m. when police arrived on scene.

Victims: Two adult males, riding the same motorcycle, were discovered at the scene. One was pronounced dead immediately; the other was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Origins of the Incident: Investigators determined the conflict began earlier, involving a verbal altercation between Ortega‑Camero and the motorcyclists—a confrontation that escalated when the motorcyclist allegedly fired a shot at Ortega‑Camero’s vehicle.

The Crash Itself: Denver Police say Ortega‑Camero intentionally collided with the motorcycle, pushing it into oncoming traffic, where another vehicle then struck the riders. He fled on foot but was apprehended the next day.

Charges Filed: Ortega‑Camero remains in custody, facing investigation for vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.

Why This Matters

This heartbreaking event underscores how quickly road rage can escalate from a heated exchange to devastating violence. This case serves as a stark reminder: staying calm, avoiding confrontations, and prioritizing safety can make all the difference. Responsible drivers can help prevent such tragedies.

The Investigation suggests that the person was struck by multiple vehicles.
While some drivers stayed behind to assist, no citations have been issued as of now. A witness, Terin Bolton—who was returning from Colorado Springs—described the scene as shocking, noting multiple cars stopped and the seriousness of the incident.

CSP spokesperson Trooper Sherri Mendez highlighted an ongoing increase in summer traffic fatalities statewide. As of August 6, Colorado had already seen 163 fatal crashes this year—bringing the statewide total to 278, compared to 307 for the prior year. CSP continues its efforts to curb these tragedies through sobriety checkpoints and public safety programs. The public is also encouraged to report aggressive or impaired drivers by dialing *277, providing vehicle descriptions, license plate information, and location details.

Tragedy struck early this morning when a pedestrian was killed in a crash on eastbound Interstate 70 near Peoria Street in Denver. According to Denver7, the incident happened just before 3 a.m., prompting authorities to close all eastbound lanes at Peoria for several hours.

Traffic was diverted off I-70, with significant backups stretching past Central Park Boulevard toward Quebec Street. Commuters were advised to take alternate routes, including Central Park Boulevard or Quebec Street for local traffic. Those traveling from the south were directed to use I-225, while drivers coming from the north could take Green Valley Ranch Boulevard to Peña Boulevard or E 120th Avenue to E-470.

The highway reopened at approximately 6:07 a.m., but lingering delays persisted for nearly 20 minutes afterward. Authorities have not released details on the circumstances leading to the collision or the identity of the victim.

Pedestrian Safety and Legal Rights After a Fatal Crash

Pedestrian crashes on high-speed roadways like I-70 are especially devastating due to the severe impact forces involved. In many cases, these accidents raise complex legal questions, including whether proper lighting, signage, and driver attention played a role. Surviving family members may have the right to seek justice through a wrongful death claim, which can help cover funeral expenses, lost income, and the emotional loss of a loved one.

If you or someone you love has been injured or killed in a pedestrian accident in Denver or anywhere in Colorado, it’s important to speak with an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible. An attorney can investigate the crash, preserve evidence, and hold negligent parties accountable.

On August 5, 2025, a tragic crash along one of Colorado’s most dangerous roadways has claimed two lives and left a child injured.

At approximately 8 a.m. on Tuesday, a silver Honda Civic veered off U.S. Highway 550, also known as the Million Dollar Highway, near milepost 88—about five miles south of Ouray. The car reportedly plunged over 300 feet down a steep embankment, landing upside-down in Red Mountain Creek.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, two adults were killed, and a juvenile girl was rescued from the wreckage around 11:27 a.m. She was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Source: Denver7 – See article here

⛰️ Recovery and Road Closure

Rescue and recovery efforts were difficult and dangerous due to the remote terrain. The road was closed in both directions while crews worked to retrieve the victims and investigate the scene. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) offered no immediate estimate for reopening the highway.

⚠️ A Deadly Stretch of Road

The Million Dollar Highway is a renowned scenic drive—but it’s also notoriously hazardous:

– Narrow lanes (as narrow as 23 feet in spots)
– No guardrails in many high-exposure areas
– Sharp mountain curves and drop-offs
– Frequent snow, ice, and avalanches during winter months

Despite the low posted speed limit of 25 mph, accidents are not uncommon.

Between January 2020 and December 2024, 53 crashes occurred along this 15-mile stretch south of Ouray. 33 of those involved vehicles leaving the roadway, and only one other incident was fatal. Eleven crashes resulted in injuries.

🧠 What Drivers Should Know

This heartbreaking incident is a reminder that Colorado’s mountainous roads require utmost caution. Even experienced drivers can make mistakes or fall victim to weather, terrain, or vehicle malfunctions.

When traveling roads like US-550:
– Drive slowly, even below posted limits.
– Check weather and avalanche forecasts in advance.
– Watch for black ice, rocks, or debris on the road.
– Never take your eyes off the road—even for a second.

On the morning of Monday, August 4, 2025, around 7:15 a.m., a wrong-way Ford F-150 driven by a 25-year-old man from Parker veered into oncoming southbound traffic near milepost 136 on Highway 9 just south of Kremmling. It collided head-on with a GMC Yukon driven by a 34-year-old man from Kremmling.
The crash caused both vehicles to erupt in flames. Emergency responders reported that the SUV was so severely burned and mangled that they could not initially confirm how many people were inside. Authorities later confirmed the GMC Yukon carried four passengers in addition to the driver — all of whom tragically died at the scene. The Ford F-150 driver was airlifted with life-threatening injuries.
Highway 9 was shut down for nearly 20 miles — from 2 miles south of Kremmling to 8 miles north of Silverthorne — as first responders and investigators worked the scene. Northbound drivers were rerouted via the unpaved Ute Pass, while southbound vehicles were diverted along Grand County Road 1 (Trough Road). The road remained closed for roughly 8 hours and reopened around 3:15 p.m. Source: Summit Daily

The Colorado State Patrol is continuing its investigation into what caused the driver to enter the wrong lane. No charges have yet been announced. Anyone with information is asked to contact CSP Dispatch at (970) 249-4392 and reference case VC25269.

While authorities have not yet released the names of the victims, the West Grand School District acknowledged that a local family may have been involved in the tragedy — intensifying the impact on the tight-knit Kremmling community.
Timing & Scope: Within one evening into early morning hours, three separate hit‑and‑run crashes occurred across Westminster, Denver, and Aurora—each resulting in at least one fatality.

Public Involvement: In Aurora, community members who called police after hearing a loud vehicle and seeing reporting helped identify the suspect, illustrating the critical role of public collaboration combined with camera technology. CBS News+29News+2Denver 7 Colorado News (KMGH)+2Denver 7 Colorado News (KMGH)+3Denver 7 Colorado News (KMGH)+39News+3Denver 7 Colorado News (KMGH)CBS NewsCBS News

Technology’s Role: MESH and Flock video analytics enabled police to trace the suspect vehicle after the crash and confirm its route. Aurora officials credited these tools for aiding the swift arrest. CBS News

Vulnerable Road Users: In Aurora and Westminster, victims were pedestrians or scooter riders—underscoring increased vulnerability when drivers flee the scene.

Final Thoughts

These tragic events highlight the urgency of driver accountability and the value of community support in investigations. Fleeing the scene doesn’t just compound legal consequences—it denies victims and families closure.

AURORA — August 1, 2025 — A 17-year-old driver has been detained following a three-car accident on South Buckley Road just north of South Pitkin Way, Aurora. The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m., and subsequent police investigation indicates the teen fled the scene on foot after rear-ending a Subaru, prompting a pedestrian pursuit and arrest.

Incident Summary

– When & Where: Approximately 6:30 a.m., near South Buckley Road and South Pitkin Way, Aurora.
– The Collision: A Hyundai driven by the teen rear-ended a Subaru; the Subaru’s driver then pursued the fleeing teen. A Dodge Charger was also involved, sustaining minor damage during the chain of events.
– Pursuit & Arrest: The Hyundai driver—identified as a 17-year-old—exited the vehicle and fled. The Subaru driver chased the teen to a nearby intersection and pinned him to the ground until Aurora Police arrived.
– Injuries & Road Impacts: The Subaru driver was hospitalized with unspecified injuries. The Charger driver was uninjured. One northbound lane of S. Buckley Road was closed during the investigation.

Broader Risk Factors & Legal Implications

Aurora PD reports that charges—including hit-and-run—are pending for the juvenile driver. Adult charging is limited under Colorado law for offenders under 18. Teen drivers may underestimate the legal and safety risks when leaving crash scenes—especially after collisions causing injury. State law requires drivers to remain at a crash scene and provide aid or report the incident. Even moderate-speed rear-end collisions in multi-vehicle scenarios can trigger dangerous chain reactions—especially in high-traffic corridors like Buckley Road during morning rush.

Safety Insights for Drivers & Families

– Hit-and-run laws apply even to juveniles: Running from an accident—regardless of age—can lead to criminal charges and civil liability.
– Witnesses matter: The Subaru driver’s pursuit led directly to intervention; staying on scene may reduce legal consequences.
– Multi-vehicle crashes escalate fast: Awareness in dense traffic zones—particularly near intersections—is key to preventing secondary collisions.

Steps to Take If Involved in an Accident

If you’re involved in a crash—whether as a teenager or adult driver:
1. Stay at the scene until cleared by law enforcement or medical personnel.
2. Call 911 immediately, especially if other parties appear injured.
3. Exchange information with all involved drivers.
4. Document the scene: photos, videos, witness statements.
5. Consult an attorney if there’s injury—whether you are a victim or suspect.

DENVER — August 1, 2025 — A motorcycle rider was killed Friday evening when their bike collided with a guardrail on eastbound Interstate 70 near Loveland Pass. The crash, which occurred just before 9 p.m., prompted Colorado State Patrol to close eastbound I‑70 while CDOT set up detours and managed traffic delays.

Incident Snapshot

– When: ~8:55 p.m. on August 1, 2025
– Where: Eastbound I‑70 at approximately mile point 223, just east of the Loveland Pass corridor
– Victim: A solo motorcyclist — no other vehicles were involved
– Cause: The motorcycle struck a guardrail and the rider was pronounced dead at the scene
– Closure: Eastbound I‑70 was shut through the Loveland Pass area; traffic was routed over US 6 until reopening

Why This Happened: Terrain & Road Risk

The Loveland Pass corridor climbs to nearly 12,000 ft with steep grades and tight curves. Mountain sections of I‑70 include limited shoulders, dual-lane squeeze zones, and minimal margin for rider error. Under nighttime conditions, these features pose serious hazards. Guardrails, while critical for vehicle containment, often become fatal contact points for motorcyclists at speed.

Broader Context: Motorcycle Safety in Mountain Corridors

I‑70 carries significant commuter and recreational traffic, especially during summer weekends. The combination of speed, narrow shoulders, and abrupt elevation changes increases the crash risk for motorcyclists. In recent years, Colorado has seen a rise in single-vehicle motorcycle fatalities in mountain corridors, with Loveland and Vail Pass frequently involved.

Rider Safety Tips for Mountain Travel

– Slow down before entering curves or descents.
– Use high-visibility gear and maintain bright front/rear lighting.
– Avoid night riding on mountain roads whenever possible.
– Know your route and elevation changes before setting out.

Encouraging News — But Still Too Many Lives Lost

As of April 25, 2025, Colorado has reported a 21% drop in traffic fatalities compared to the same time last year—falling from 164 deaths in early 2024 to 130 deaths so far in 2025. While this reduction is a hopeful sign, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Colorado State Patrol emphasize a sobering truth: 130 lives lost is still 130 too many.

This year’s decline suggests that Colorado drivers may be embracing safer behaviors, but traffic safety officials warn that continued vigilance is essential, especially as the busy summer months approach.

What’s Driving the Decline in Fatal Crashes?

CDOT’s data shows encouraging declines across nearly every major crash category:

– Unbuckled fatalities: down 12.5%
– Pedestrian and bicyclist deaths: down 17.5%
– Motorcyclist deaths: down 12.5%
– Teen driver deaths: down 70%
– Impaired driving fatalities: down 19%
– Distracted driving deaths: down 22%
– Speed-related deaths: down 26%

CDOT credits these improvements to safer driving habits, increased enforcement, and several recent legal changes that target high-risk behaviors behind the wheel.

Regional Highlights and Concerns

Many of Colorado’s largest counties are reporting fewer traffic fatalities so far in 2025:

– El Paso County: 20 deaths → 10
– Adams County: 23 → 14
– Weld County: 17 → 14
– Pueblo County: 13 → 9
– Arapahoe County: 13 → 8
– Jefferson County: 11 → 7
– Larimer County: 11 → 5
– Boulder County: 6 → 4

However, some areas have seen increases:
– Denver County remains unchanged at 15 deaths
– Mesa County: 2 → 4
– Douglas County: 1 → 8, a sharp and concerning spike

New Laws, Safer Roads

Several new laws that went into effect in 2024 and 2025 are believed to be helping drive down fatalities:

– Hands-Free Law: Using handheld cellphones while driving is now prohibited, with fines starting at $75 for first-time offenses.
– Child Passenger Safety Law: Booster seats are now required until at least age 9, with additional rules for rear-facing car seats and mandatory seat belts for passengers through age 18.
– Express Lane Enforcement: Weaving in or out of express lanes across solid lines now results in a fine of at least $75.

These changes, combined with targeted enforcement campaigns and public awareness efforts, have played a key role in improving driver behavior statewide.

Key Safety Tips from Law Enforcement

Colorado State Patrol reminds everyone that every crash is preventable. Whether you’re driving, walking, or biking, here are a few essential safety tips:

– Always wear your seat belt, even on short trips
– Put your phone away and avoid distractions
– Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol
– Obey speed limits, especially in construction and school zones
– Watch for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly at intersections

As we head into the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer” between Memorial Day and Labor Day, extra caution is critical.

A Step Toward Vision Zero

CDOT has a long-term goal of reducing serious injuries and fatalities by 22.5% by 2027. This year’s numbers show that with community commitment and stronger laws, that goal is within reach.

But behind each number is a family, a friend, and a future that was lost. The work is far from done.

Have You or a Loved One Been Injured in a Crash?

Denver Police are investigating a collision between a motor vehicle and a bicyclist that happened on Tuesday morning, July 29, 2025, at the intersection of North Dunkirk Street and East Maxwell Place in the Montbello neighborhood.

According to police, the bicyclist suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. The driver’s condition has not been disclosed. Traffic in the area was temporarily disrupted as crews cleared the scene and investigators collected evidence.

What We Know So Far

– Date/time: Tuesday, July 29, 2025, reported in the afternoon.

– Location: Montbello neighborhood, intersection of Dunkirk Street and Maxwell Place.

– Injuries: The cyclist was seriously injured; details remain under investigation. No confirmation yet on motorist injuries.

– Police are still examining how the crash occurred—whether right‑of‑way violations, turning vehicles, blind spots, or lighting played a role remains unknown.

Why Bicycle Collisions Like This Happen in Denver

Denver has seen a rise in bike-related traffic incidents as more residents choose cycling for commuting or exercise. Yet many intersections—especially residential areas like Montbello—pose risks when motorists and cyclists share the road under unclear or inadequate infrastructure.

Common factors in these crashes include:

– Drivers failing to spot bikers in lanes or during turns

– Insufficient buffers for cyclists, leading to near-miss or severe collisions

– Limited street lighting or obscured visibility during afternoon or evening hours

– Gaps in signage and safe crossing infrastructure at mixed-use intersections

Even at moderate speeds, collisions involving bicycles can cause catastrophic injuries—broken bones, head trauma, spinal damage, and more—because cyclists lack protective barriers.

Legal Rights & Help Following a Bicycle Accident

Suffering injuries in a bike crash can be overwhelming, both physically and financially. Hospital bills, missed work, rehabilitation, and emotional distress quickly accumulate.

Colorado law may allow injured cyclists (or their families) to pursue compensation for:

– Medical expenses & ongoing care

– Lost wages

– Pain and suffering

– Damages for permanent impairment or disfigurement

To pursue these claims, it’s often necessary to obtain crash reports, investigate liability, and evaluate insurance policies. Having an experienced advocate can make a difference—especially when insurers or opposing parties assume fault based on assumptions about bicyclists.
