Tragic Wrong‑Way Collision on Highway 9 Claims Five Lives
On the morning of Monday, August 4, 2025, around 7:15 a.m., a wrong-way Ford F-150 driven by a 25-year-old man from Parker veered into oncoming southbound traffic near milepost 136 on Highway 9 just south of Kremmling. It collided head-on with a GMC Yukon driven by a 34-year-old man from Kremmling. Source: Denver7
The crash caused both vehicles to erupt in flames. Emergency responders reported that the SUV was so severely burned and mangled that they could not initially confirm how many people were inside. Authorities later confirmed the GMC Yukon carried four passengers in addition to the driver — all of whom tragically died at the scene. Highway 9 was shut down for nearly 20 miles — from 2 miles south of Kremmling to 8 miles north of Silverthorne — as first responders and investigators worked the scene. Northbound drivers were rerouted via the unpaved Ute Pass, while southbound vehicles were diverted along Grand County Road 1 (Trough Road). The road remained closed for roughly 8 hours and reopened around 3:15 p.m. Source: Summit Daily
The Colorado State Patrol is continuing its investigation into what caused the driver to enter the wrong lane. No charges have yet been announced. Anyone with information is asked to contact CSP Dispatch at (970) 249-4392 and reference case VC25269.
While authorities have not yet released the names of the victims, the West Grand School District acknowledged that a local family may have been involved in the tragedy — intensifying the impact on the tight-knit Kremmling community. Source: Denver7
