Colorado State Patrol reports that crashes involving commercial vehicles have become a serious safety issue, totaling 1,270 incidents from January 1 to June 30, 2024, and 1,188 during the first half of 2025—despite a modest 6.5% drop in the latter period. See CBS News Colorado News Article Here

🚛 What’s Fueling the Trend

Both drivers and carriers share responsibility for the rising number of crashes, with violations attributed to distracted driving, speeding, and unsafe lane changes. In non-fatal crashes, 60% were attributed to commercial vehicle operators; among fatal incidents, 66% involved fault on the part of non-commercial drivers—with impairment contributing to one-quarter of those.

🛣️ Where Semi-Truck Crashes Are Most Common

Interstate 70, particularly the mountainous high-country segment, is the most frequent corridor for commercial vehicle crashes. Severe weather and rugged terrain often exacerbate risk in these regions, while urban areas contend with traffic volume and varied elevation challenges.

🚨 Safety Takes Center Stage

Captain John Hahn of the CSP Motor Carrier Unit warned that passenger vehicles cutting too close to trucks can ruin stopping distance safety. He noted, “If the car speeds up to cut in front of a truck, it doesn’t give enough distance… to stop before it collides into the back.”

CSP emphasizes that drivers—both commercial and personal—should avoid trucks’ blind spots, drive cautiously when overtaking, and always leave space for semi-trucks to slow or maneuver safely.

⚖️ Legal Implications & Victim Advocacy

With such avoidable crashes, questions of legal liability often surface:

– Commercial truck drivers and their employers may be responsible if poor training, overwork, or failure to follow safety mandates—such as driving a semi-truck without adequate rest—are factors.

– Passenger drivers who cut improperly or merge unsafely may also face liability, especially in collisions resulting in injury or death.

– For victims, pursuing a case often involves detailed investigation into driver logs, training records, and vehicle maintenance to pinpoint negligence.
